How to block porn on iPhone and Android (honest version)
September 2, 2026 · Habit tool, not medical advice
Most “best porn blocker” roundups talk like your phone is one product. It is not. If you want to block porn on iPhone, the honest answer is Screen Time plus a list you will actually maintain. On Android you can put a filter in the network path. Same goal. Different mechanics. If you skip that difference, you will think the app is broken when the OS is doing what the OS allows.
This is a setup note, not a sermon. A block is friction. A porn blocker is not the plan. Set the block anyway.
Android: filter on the phone
On Android, a private VPN can send DNS for that device through a filter. SoftQuit Shield works that way when you opt in: hostnames on a list, blocked on-device. It does not ship your browsing history off the phone. Block logs, if you keep them, are hostnames and times for your own count.
What goes wrong:
- Another VPN already owns the tunnel. Turn that one off, then finish Shield setup.
- You only blocked “the obvious sites” and left the social apps that dump you into Explore.
- You can disable protection in one tap. When you turn Shield on, pick a cool-down (thirty minutes up to a day) so late-night you cannot yank the fence in the same breath as the urge.
Add the domains you actually use, not a fantasy list from a forum. Test one known site. Confirm the block. Then leave it on for a week before you tinker.
iPhone: Screen Time is the block
iPhone will not let a random app sit in the network the way Android will. SoftQuit still lets you keep a Shield list on the phone. The list does not filter Safari by itself. You apply restrictions in Screen Time: Settings, Screen Time, Content and Privacy Restrictions, limit adult websites, and add the domains you care about.
Stronger setup:
- Turn on Screen Time.
- Set a Screen Time passcode you will not type at midnight. A partner or a friend holding it is the classic move. If you live alone, write it down and put it in a drawer you will not open in the dark.
- Limit adult websites. Add extra domains from your own history, not from memory.
- Put downtime on browsers and the social apps that act like a porn on-ramp after 10pm.
- Keep the SoftQuit list in sync with what you added, so you are not maintaining two stories.
If you hold the passcode and you know it by heart, you will lift the block. Plan for that. The block still slows you down. Pair it with the phone out of the bedroom and a ten-minute interrupt.
Shared rules that actually matter
Block hostnames, not a fantasy of “the whole internet.” People relapse through Reels, Explore, Stories, and a second device. Put the laptop on the same kind of friction, or accept that the phone was never the only door.
Do not confuse a block log with surveillance you owe someone else. SoftQuit stores hostnames for your progress if you opt into Shield, not a full browsing history. You can turn Shield off. On Android the cool-down you chose at activation is the wait.
Privacy still counts. App lock, discreet notifications, and a quieter home-screen icon exist because this is easy to snoop if you leave the app open on a table. A private quit plan is part of the same problem as the block.
After the block is on
Leave it alone for seven days. Use a sessions cap. Check in. When a site dies and you still want to hunt, that hunt is the urge. Run the interrupt instead of hunting.
SoftQuit is a Control habit app: sessions plan, check-ins, Urge Breaker, Shield, Social Pause. Sign in with Google or email. Shield is opt-in. Social Pause can lock apps on Android; on iPhone it is a timer you commit to. Habit tool, not medical advice. If you cannot function, talk to a person who is trained for that. The OS settings still help tonight.

- A porn blocker helps. It is not the plan. A porn blocker cuts easy access. Most people still slip through social apps, another browser, or a late-night mood. Pair the fence with a cap.
